A trader earned a substantial sum from wagers on the downfall of the Venezuelan leader shortly prior to it was officially announced, leading to inquiries about potential gains made from inside knowledge of the event.

Market Movement in Predictions

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a crypto-powered platform, that the Venezuelan president would be removed from office by the end of January increased in the time leading up to former President Trump declared on January 3rd that the Venezuelan leader had been seized.

A particular user, which became a member last month and took four positions, all on the Venezuelan situation, earned over $436,000 from a modest bet of $32,537.

It remains unclear. The anonymous account had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Announcement

Trading information shows that traders estimated the likelihood of a political change at just a low 6.5 percent in the afternoon of the prior Friday.

Yet these probabilities had climbed to over 10% by late Friday night and skyrocketed in the first hours of the next day, pointing to a sudden change in positions immediately prior to the public announcement was made.

"This particular bet has all the characteristics of a trade based on confidential knowledge," commented a financial reform advocate.

Several of other individuals also profited significant sums from bets on the same outcome.

Political Attention Intensifies

Some lawmakers are starting to take note.

Proposed legislation introduced on recently would prevent federal workers from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a wager.

Insider trading is illegal in the traditional financial markets, but there are less oversight in the event betting arena.

A company executive for Kalshi said their site "strictly forbids insider trading of any form."
