A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's major public works projects.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We will meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” stated the national leader.
The president reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the prior year. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The construction of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in civilian works. They were executed at an accelerated pace, surpassing expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled ongoing questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party called for an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This halt was requested while awaiting a full technical review. The party declared that the situation "requires immediate answers."
In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been operating in total adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these strategic undertakings.
